To Get Started
At a networking meeting this morning I asked what they would like me to write about today. The majority wanted to know how to write a blog post. Many people are intimidated not so much about the mechanics of a blog post, but make the claim that this is what’s stopping them. Or, they might mention time as an excuse, or they just procrastinate it to death. What I hear in their voice when making these excuses is: I really mean, “What value do I have to offer the world anyway?”
You are the Key
No matter what comes up in business – deciding on a business plan, where to advertise, training your staff, connecting to customers, social media strategy, hiring/firing , writing a blog post- the bottom line is YOU.
- What is your value?
- Why would anyone want to listen to you?
- What is unique about you?
The Nuts and Bolts of writing a blog post starts with tapping into who you are and what aspect of yourself you want to express. Your blog post can be technically perfect but if there is no soul in it, no one will want to read it. Ana Hoffman, the Queen of Blogdom, agrees. In her post about Writing a Post Per Day she states how she hates to write and did badly in English in school, and yet she writes a post every day to build her business: “Personality is Key: Find strengths within yourself and focus on those. For instance, I realized that I like to write how I speak without bothering to sugar-coat anything. It took such a tremendous pressure of my shoulders to stop pretending to be what I wasn’t!” (This is a person I recommend you follow for outstanding tips in growing your audience.)
Connect to Your Audience
People want to connect with you. Now, when I suggest getting in touch with who you are I don’t mean: I am a mother, a teacher, a CEO, a waitress, a doctor, a Little League coach, an insurance salesman – although those are just expressions of who you are. I mean WHO are you? What are your Talents, Abilities and Gifts (T.A.G.s) that you use to express yourself in the world?
What Abilities, those God given innate things you can do without thinking about them?
What Talents, those effective ways you have of expressing your Abilities, do you want to reveal in your Post?
Once you have reached in a pulled out that aspect of yourself that you want to express then decide:
- What is the pain that your audience is crying out for you to answer?
- What is the resolution that you hold?
- How will you connect to your audience with your message?
Basic Technical Points:
- Have a beginning , middle and end to create a logical flow.
- Use Bullet points for easy access to the eye of your key points.
- Use the formatting function of your blog program to create headings in the text to make it easy to follow.
- Keyword it. Without these tags, your words will go into the dark hole of Cyberspace unread by your target audience.
Enjoy the satisfaction that you YOU DID IT – you revealed an important piece of who you are and in the doing resolved the pain of others.
